What is "hygge"?

2019/01/01

Happy new year everybody!!!

Today, let’s learn a new word– in Danish!

Have you heard of the word ^hygge ̄ before?

Hygge is not an English word. It¨s from Danish, the language of Denmark. However, in recent years hygge has become an international buzzword. Hygge is a feeling, or atmosphere, of being cozy.

Here are some photos that show the meaning of hygge:

(I think that cats understand?hygge well!)

According to visitdenmark.co.uk, ^hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Cosying up with a loved one for a movie C that¨s hygge, too. And there’s nothing more hygge than sitting around with friends and family, discussing the big and small things in life. ̄

Hygge is very culturally important to people in Denmark. Some people think that hygge is one reason why Denmark is one of the world¨s happiest countries. But they are not the only people who experience hygge!

I think that Japanese people experience hygge when they use a kotatsu! When you sit under a kotatsu, you can relax and enjoy being warm and comfortable. You can also spend time with friends and family under the kotatsu.

So, this winter, I encourage you to create your own moments of hygge! Light some candles, make hot chocolate, get some blankets, and take it easy!
